Former college quarterback Tyler Buchner has won a national championship in college lacrosse just months after transferring from Alabama to Notre Dame.
Yes, you read that correctly: lacrosse.
Buchner surprised just about everyone when he entered the transfer portal as a lacrosse player late last year, but the move has already paid off.
The former four-star recruit was the 10th-ranked quarterback in the 2021 class, with the likes of Caleb Williams, J.J. McCarthy, and Quinn Ewers among the QBs ahead of him. He got 16 scholarship offers and would commit to Notre Dame over Alabama, Georgia, USC, and Michigan, among several other programs.
Tyler Buchner played 10 games as a freshman, albeit mostly at the end of contests. He got even fewer minutes in his second season but got to start the Gator Bowl against South Carolina after Drew Pine entered the portal.
The 21-year-old was named the game’s MVP, completing 18 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns in the 45-38 win.

Buchner eventually joined the Crimson Tide but lost a battle for the starting job to Jalen Milroe in fall camp.
Nick Saban did call on him against USF in Week 3 following some early struggles from Milroe, but he could only complete 14 passes for 34 yards, prompting Saban to stick with the former.
Tyler Buchner Wins A National Championship With Notre Dame
Tyler Buchner hit another low point after being knocked down to the Tide’s third-string quarterback. He entered the portal shortly after Alabama lost the Rose Bowl, with Saban also retiring.
He returned to Notre Dame, this time as a lacrosse player, helping them win back-to-back national championships with a win over Maryland on Memorial Day.
