Freshman quarterback Kaidon Salter is facing legal trouble for the second time during his short time with Tennessee. He and freshman offensive lineman Amari McNeill have been arrested on a charge of marijuana possession.
During a traffic stop on Saturday for no tail lights and a covered registration, Salter admitted to having marijuana in the car and telling McNeill to throw it out the window. The QB promptly got arrested charged with simple possession.
“Mr. Salter was stopped for a violation of a light law (no tail lights) and a tinted plate cover over the vehicle’s registration,” the police report states. “Mr. Salter subsequently admitted (post Miranda) to having marijuana (approx. 4 grams) and telling the passenger to throw it out when officers stopped the vehicle.”
McNeill corroborated Salter’s story as the bag of weed was found on the ground in front of the vehicle at the scene. McNeill was also charged with simple possession.
“On June 19 2021 at approximately 0300 hours a traffic stop was performed on the vehicle,” the University of Tennessee police report of McNeill’s arrest states. “A bag of marijuana was observed on the ground in front of the vehicle and the defendant admitted to throwing the bag from the vehicle in hopes of avoiding detection. The defendant was charged with simple possession (citation A750643) and released from the scene.”
Salter is not doing himself any favors after he just got reinstated from a suspension that stemmed from an incident that occurred at a residence hall back in March. During that time, he and three other players were arrested for misdemeanor drug charges and subsequently suspended by head coach Josh Heupel.

During his suspension, Salter released an apology for his decisions on social media.
“I just want to take this opportunity to apologize to my team, my coaches the Vol fans & my parents for my negative choices,” Salter tweeted. “I know my choices disappointed many but my end goal is to eliminate my distractions get on the field & earn my respect back #gottoKEEPmypopsPROUD #levelup.”
The four-star recruit was the second-highest signee in the Vols’ latest recruiting class, behind only Willis.
