Such an unfortunate way to lose a game.
During a crazy game between Darien and Greenwich high school in late October — Greenwich QB James Rinello was attempting to drive his squad down the field in the 4th quarter, but he would mistakenly spike the ball on fourth-and-one at the 13-yard line and end those chances.
No. 4 Darien held on for a 27-21 victory over the No. 3 Cardinals Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.
“It was a tale of two halves,” Darien coach Rob Trifone said. “Obviously, we played extremely well in the first half, and then in the second half, two or three of our best players were cramping and we were shuffling people around. All of a sudden, it was a back-and-forth slugfest. You can’t give a team like that so many opportunities, but I was happy with the way we responded.”
The final result ended Greenwich’s 18-game winning streak that dated back to the 2017 season where they last lost to Darien 31-22 at Stamford’s Boyle Stadium.
