Being a ref can be quite hard sometimes, but who knew you could be shot for doing your job.
A referee at a Maine Maritime Academy football game found himself on the receiving of a lot of pain when he was hit in the face with a cannon blast at the school’s homecoming game last Saturday.
The tradition for the Academy’s athletic department is to fire the cannon using a blank shotgun shell when the team scores.
This time around, an unidentified person brought their own cannon to the game and loaded it with black powder and placed a “wad” inside. After the team scored, the man fired his cannon and hit a ref on the sideline in the head.
The ref was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The local sheriff’s department is investigating the incident.
