Things got really serious after the CFP semis were decided in December as the Florida State Seminoles and their fans felt like they were cheated out of a spot after going undefeated and winning the ACC Championship.
The snub set off a debate that is going to linger for a while. FSU lost its quarterback Jordan Travis to injury and, though they won said title without him, were unlikely to be competitive in the semis. Just look at how badly they lost to Georgia.
Still, they did what they needed to do to qualify and feel like they should have been given a chance to compete for the national title.
ESPN is reporting that fans took things way too far, going after members of the CFP committee with various threats and forcing them to contact the FBI. According to the committee’s executive director Bill Hancock, he and other members felt it necessary to seek outside help.
“We’ve stayed ahead of it,” he was quoted as saying. “We’ve been in contact with the FBI just to say, ‘We got this. We got a threat on my house. We want you to know about it and tell us what should we do about it.’ Most of us did…
“I’ve been doing this 35 years. I’ve seen it and I understand those fans, but this one was absolutely over the top and inappropriate. In my 35 years, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
This isn’t so surprising given the outrage that followed the decision. But stuff like this really shouldn’t be happening over sports.
