Jim Harbaugh’s “passing of the torch” comments to a reporter are going viral across social media and leading to increased speculation that he’s preparing to leave the Michigan Wolverines.
The 60-year-old Harbaugh, who led the Wolverines to a national championship game victory over Washington last week, has interviewed for the Los Angeles Chargers’ and Atlanta Falcons’ head coaching positions.
Speaking to reporter Jon Root, Harbaugh stated that he’s “getting ready for the next season,” and that “there’s a passing of the torch.” Harbaugh didn’t elaborate on that point, but fans took it as a sign that he’ll hand over his Michigan head coaching duties for a second go at the NFL.

Of course, Harbaugh may also be referencing the turnover on the roster with his “passing of the torch” comment. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and wide receiver Roman Wilson have all declared for April’s 2024 NFL Draft.
Before taking over the Wolverines’ head coaching position in 2015, Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers for four years (2011 to 2014). Harbaugh led San Fran to three straight NFC Championship Game appearances and a trip to Super Bowl 47.
