Back in 2017, five Kennesaw State University cheerleaders caused an uproar when they began kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem, with the school taking action by banning the girls from the pregame routine, but quickly did an about-face and let the cheerleaders back on the field.
Just ahead of the new season, four of those five girls were not invited back to the squad. As a result, One of the cheerleaders sued the university, claiming they violated her civil rights by trying to prevent her from protesting during the playing of the national anthem.
Fast forward to December 2019 and Tommia Dean has now been awarded $145,000 in a legal settlement. She will reportedly receive $93,000 and the rest will go to her attorneys.
“A compromise has been reached,” the agreement states. “The intent of this agreement is to buy peace of mind from future controversy and forestall further attorney’s fees, costs, or other expenses of litigation, and further that this agreement represents the compromise, economic resolution of disputed claims and, as such, shall not be deemed in any manner an admission, finding, conclusion, evidence or indication for any purposes whatsoever, that the KSU defendants acted contrary to the law or otherwise violated the rights of Dean.”
