Duke quarterback Riley Leonard led the Blue Devils to a win, but he couldn’t have gotten it done without the help of his mother heckling him.
During Monday’s game between Duke and Clemson, ESPN’s broadcast shared a ritual for the Blue Devils quarterback. Leonard has his mom send him a text saying, “You suck” before every game.
He also wears a wristband with that same message.
Leonard said the text “brings me back down to reality” but clarified that his mother is still “the sweetest person ever.”
Whatever works.
Last year, Duke enjoyed the program’s best record in nearly a decade, thanks mainly to Leonard as he threw for 2,967 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, while adding 699 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.

Riley Leonard helped Duke pull off one of the biggest upsets in the football program’s history on Monday night as the Blue Devils topped No. 9 Clemson 28-7.
Leonard was 17-for-33 with 175 passing yards. He also had 98 yards on the ground and a 44-yard rushing touchdown. The Blue Devils controlled both sides of the ball. Clemson fumbled three times and lost two of them.
Clemson is likely to drop in the next Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Tigers play Charles Southern next.
Duke will take on Lafayette in their next matchup.
