With Lionel Messi recently signing with Inter Miami of the M.L.S., soccer players all over North America will take inspiration from him as he is one of the greatest and most creative players we have ever seen take to the soccer pitch.
Drake University freshman defender Zoey Mahoney channeled her inner Messi over the weekend when her Drake Bulldogs took on the Panthers from Northern Iowa. Just five minutes into the match, the Bulldogs had a throw-in deep in their opponents territory. Mahoney took the throw in resulting in one of the most unbelievable, athletic goals you will ever see on a soccer field.
Mahoney performed what is known as a ‘flip throw’, where a player will run to gain momentum, then using the ball for balance, perform a somersault type move to launch the ball into the opponents scoring area. This move is used to get greater distance on the throw and Mahoney executed this to perfection as the ball ended up going in for the 1-0 lead.
Even the most casual soccer fan knows that you cannot use your hands to score, however, once the ball is thrown in, if it hits a defender or the goalkeeper before entering the net, it is deemed a legal goal which is exactly what happened here with the goalie getting a slight touch on the ball before going in.
Fans on social media could barely believe what they were seeing and here are some of their reactions to the insane goal:
