Legendary basketball announcer Dick Vitale has had some very public health struggles across the past couple of years, and this week brought another challenge for him.
The 84-year-old announced that he is now battling vocal cord cancer. His doctor has told him that this cancer has “an extremely high cure rate and that radiation, not more surgery, is the best path,” he added.
After being diagnosed with cancer for a third time, Vitale took to Twitter on Friday to thank everybody for their love, support, and prayers as he states he was headed to meet with his oncologist to begin radiation treatments immediately.
“Thanks so much to ESPN my 2nd family for 45 yrs.& the fans , coaches & media for their & ! It has really inspired me . Heading now to meet with my head Oncologist about the 6 week Monday thru Friday RADIATION treatments,” Vitale wrote.
Vitale has shown his thankfulness before. When he returned to the microphone on Nov. 23, 2021, he broke down in tears thanking fans for all of their support.
This is the third time Vitale has battled cancer. He was first diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021 and was diagnosed with lymphoma several months later. Last April, Vitale celebrated after learning that he was cancer-free following a seven-month bout with Lymphoma.
