Fans are feeling it for a longtime ESPN announcer following the revelation of a terrible development.
College basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale has announced that he has been diagnosed with vocal chord cancer but is adamant about returning to the mic this year.
The 84-year-old underwent surgery in Boston this week and tests showed he was suffering from the aforementioned disease. The Hall of Famer has released a statement in which he expressed disappointment but is set to embark on six weeks of radiation treatment that could speed him back to the announcer’s table.
“I plan to fight like hell to be ready to call games when the college hoops season kicks off in the fall,” the 84-year-old declared.
As noted above, fans have been quite empathetic. And so too have Vitale’s ESPN colleagues.
After spending so many years with the network and earning the respect of so many of his fellow workmates, it was no surprise to see so many individuals from the ESPN family reaching out to wish Dicky V the best in his latest battle with cancer:

This isn’t Vitale’s first battle with the disease as he’s been diagnosed with melanoma and bile duct cancer in the past. Following his recovery, he broke down on the mic while thanking fans for their support.
