The sports world is still reeling over the shocking and sudden death of Mike Leach. Mississippi State is mourning the loss of its head football coach with the news Mike Leach died Monday night at the age of 61.
A statement from his family stated he was an organ donor.
“Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father, and grandfather. He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity,” the statement said. “We are supported and uplifted by the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, and football fans around the world. Thank you for sharing in the joy of our beloved husband and father’s life.”
Leach had been at Mississippi State for three seasons after stints at Texas Tech and Washington State. His last game was a 24-22 victory against rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl to finish the season with an 8-4 record.
At his third year as the Bulldogs’ head coach in Starkville, Leach guided the team to an 8-4 record in 2022, securing a spot in the ReliaQuest Bowl versus Illinois.
Mississippi State plans on finishing its season against the Fighting Illini Jan. 2nd. The game will be played at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

During his 21-year coaching career, Leach led his teams to 19 bowl games. Leach had a career record of 158-107.
