Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach Deion Sanders shared the emotional text messages he exchanged with the team’s two-way star in Travis Hunter during a recent meeting.
Hunter suffered a lacerated liver after taking a big hit in the Buffaloes’ win over the rival Colorado State Rams on Sept. 16. It was reported soon after that the standout cornerback/wide receiver would miss several games.
In a video posted by Well Off Media, Sanders is shown reading out a text message from Hunter to the rest of the Buffaloes. According to Prime Time, Hunter texted him, “I need to play this week. We need to get everything we can so I can get back on the field. I’m not taking no for an answer.”
When Sanders asked his players who he thought sent the message, the room said “Travis.” The Pro Football Hall of Famer then read out his response to Hunter:
No. You ain’t ready, and I care about you more than I care about this game. You’re gonna change the game of football one day, when you’re healthy and ready. Your future is brighter than mine ever will be and ever was. Relax and get healthy, I love you son.”
Hunter has already been ruled out for the team’s upcoming home game against reigning Heisman Trophy winner and 2023 front-runner Caleb Williams and the No. 8 ranked USC Trojans.

After a surprising 3-0 start, the Buffaloes were crushed 42-6 by the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium on Saturday. The team clearly missed Hunter and his impact on both sides of the ball, but Prime Time is doing the right thing by making sure the young star gets healthy before returning to football.
