Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has offered a theory on Nick Saban’s decision to retire following the latter’s surprising announcement.
Sanders was as shocked as everyone else after learning Saban had opted to call it quits and took to social media to react to the development, suggesting the changes in college football forced “the Goat” to leave. He also called on the NCAA to make an honest assessment of the way the changes have affected the sport.
The above is simply Deion’s opinion, but he does have a relationship with Saban and probably had conversations to that effect with the former Alamaba HC.
Saban has also publicly criticized newer introductions to the game such as NIL and the transfer portal.
While Sanders has made full use of the portal, he has implied that college football is a junior version of the NFL and expects it to get worse. Still, he’s been a willing beneficiary.
Saban did not explain his motivations for stepping away from Alabama but he is likely to do so at some point. He’s 72 and has been around for a long time – sometimes that’s all you need.
