Deion Sanders has revealed one of the main things he requires from a quarterback and, surprisingly, it has nothing to do with what they can do on the field.
A recent guest on the Rich Eisen Show, the new Colorado Boulder head coach told the host he’s looking for signal throwers who have stability off the field and both parents involved in their lives.
“We want mother, father, you know, dual parents,” he explained. “We want that kid to be 3.5 [GPA] and up because he’s got to be smart.
“[He can’t make] bad decisions off the field. At all. Because he has to be a leader of men. There are so many different attributes and what we look for when we see a quarterback. And, [we] would love a coach’s son.”
That last part seems to describe Deion’s own son, Shedeur, which brought out some laughs. Deion and Shedeur’s mother, Pilar, are no longer married but both of them remain active in his life. Of course, Deion doesn’t have much of a choice as he’s been coaching the kid, who’s followed him from Jackson State to Colorado.
As for his dual-parent standard, it doesn’t only apply to QBs. He also wants offensive linemen who come from homes with both parents and have strong fathers.

He also joked that he doesn’t mind defensive linemen who come from single-parent setups and are on “free lunches … trying to rescue mama.”
