The Colorado Buffaloes have already surpassed expectations this season. They’re sitting at 3-2 after five fixtures, having won just one game last season.
Should Sanders fail to win another game in 2023, it will still be considered a successful first campaign in Colorado. And, given what we’ve seen from the Buffs so far, that’s very unlikely to be the case.
There’s already a sense that the program will stop at nothing to keep Coach Prime in Boulder, so the offer of a lifetime deal would not be off the table. Sanders, though, is not interested in one.
“That’s a wonderful gesture. I love it. But I’m smart enough to know and old and wise enough to know that that can flip on you instantaneously,” the former NFL and MLB star told a reporter who asked for his take on fans wanting him locked down in Boulder for life. “The fan only blows when you hot.
“My mama said that. Not me. So if y’all want to get mad, get mad at my mama.”
Sander earns $5.5 million a season in Boulder and ranks 32nd among college football coaches, per USA Today. While he appreciates the support he gets, he claims to block it out along with the criticism.
“If I listen to that, I’m gonna have to listen to this,” he explained. “You can’t choose that and not this.”

The Buffs will hope to improve their record to 4-2 when they face Arizona State this weekend, having dropped back-to-back games against Oregon and USC in recent weeks.
