The No. 1 CB recruit in the 2023 class has seen limited action on the Colorado Buffaloes. Cormani McClain, a five-star prospect and the No. 1 cornerback in the cycle, headlined the No. 29 recruiting class, and brought tremendous promise to the Colorado defense.
Colorado coach Deion Sanders gave an honest answer about how star recruit Cormani McClain can earn playing time.
“Study, prepare, and be on time for meetings. Show up to the darn meetings. Understand what we’re doing as a scheme. Want to play this game. Desire to play this game. Desire to be the best at this game — at practice, in the film room, and on your own free time. You do know that I check film time for each player upon the week. Thursday, I need film times from the whole staff so I can see who’s been preparing. And that’s just not about Cormani, it’s about a multitude of them. So if I don’t see that, you would be a fool to put somebody out there unprepared. Can’t do it. Won’t do it. I’m old school.”
McClain was expected to be a major part of Colorado’s defense in the coming years. He was once destined to join the Miami Hurricanes, but he switched to Colorado to be a part of Sanders’ first recruiting class at the Pac-12 program.
The freshman has two total tackles through the Buffaloes’ first four games. Both of those tackles came during Saturday’s game against Oregon, but they did not matter much as the Duck won 42-6.
Now that two-way star Travis Hunter is sidelined with a lacerated liver he suffered during the victory over Colorado State — McClain figures to see more playing time. Hunter plays wide receiver and cornerback, and both the offensive and defensive units seemed lost at times against the Ducks without him on the field.

Next up is a showdown with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams and the USC Trojans offense.
This game could easily get out of hand as well for Colorado. This could be a golden opportunity for McClain and others to make a statement on the national stage by playing well.
