Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have landed another impact player via the transfer portal to bolster their defense.
On his X/Twitter account, former Pittsburgh Panthers defensive lineman Dayon Hayes announced that he is leaving Steel City to play for Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes in Boulder:
The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Hayes recorded 13 sacks, five pass defenses and three forced fumbles over his four years at Pittsburgh. He had his best year in 2023, posting four sacks and as many pass defenses.
Though quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Travis Hunter formed an explosive offense in Colorado, the Buffaloes were largely held back by a lackluster defense. They were 124th among 133 teams in scoring defense last season with 34.8 points allowed per game, per Sports Reference.

Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes were the top story at the start of the 2023 season, jumping out to a perfect 3-0 record. This included a stunning season-opening upset win over the TCU Horned Frogs, the 2022 national runner-up.
The Buffaloes proceeded to lose seven of their final eight games, with five of those losses coming against ranked teams. Colorado’s eventful and dramatic season concluded with a 23-17 loss to the Utah Utes on Nov. 25.
Deion Sanders & Buffaloes Should Be Better In 2024
After three seasons at Jackson Stage, Sanders took over a Colorado program that had just won just a single game in the 2022 season.
Prime Time needed to assemble a new coaching staff and roster, including son Shedeur and several other standouts from Jackson State. Even though they lost seven of their final eight games in 2023, it was nonetheless a year of significant progress for Colorado.
Now that Sanders has had ample time to strengthen the Colorado roster via recruiting and the transfer portal, the Buffaloes should be even better in 2024. And of course, a healthy Travis Hunter would single-handedly go a long way in helping this team take that next step forward.
