Barstool Sports founder and obsessed bettor Dave Portnoy announced last month in a social media tirade that he has quit gambling following the Buffalo Bills’ overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
‘I quit gambling,’ Portnoy wrote on X. ‘F*** Buffalo.’
That lasted all of less than a month.
Portnoy’s New Year is off to a particularly good start. The Barstool Sports founder won $1 million with the Wolverines’ win over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday, and then came back and won another half-million dollars when the Washington Huskies upset the Texas Longhorns to make the college football national championship game.
These were his first bets since “retiring” from gambling in 2023 following a string of “monster losses.”
Video captured at Rose Bowl Stadium shows the moment he realized his bet had come through. “Holy fucking shit, I’m a million fucking bucks richer. We’re going to fucking Houston,” Portnoy said.
“Finally the Big Ten punched the SEC in the mouth. Watching their teeth break. Tale of two halves, we dominated the first and they dominated the second…When everything was on the line, it was the Michigan men who stood up and made plays when we need to.”

“Listen I’ve had a pretty good run for the past 2 decades,” Portnoy wrote in a blog post at Barstool Sports. “I’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars. Boston sports teams have won like 9,000 titles. Everything has seemingly bounced my way. But my god 2024 is setting up for maybe my best year yet. We’re not even 48 hours into the new year and Michigan has already won the Rose Bowl.”
Portnoy’s payday certainly goes a long way toward repairing the pain incurred by his previous losses but like any true gambler, he is going to continue to ride out his luck until he falls again.
The Wolverines and Huskies will face off at NRG Stadium in Houston on January 8th.
You just know Portnoy is going to test that luck again for this game.
