If you ever see an offensive lineman score in in football, it’s usually either a reception or a recovered fumble in the end zone that goes for six.
But during Saturday’s contest between Colorado Mesa and San Diego, we got a “one in a million” play that was courtesy of Mavericks’ offensive lineman Cooper Mumford. That is, Mumford himself threw a touchdown pass on a play that certainly didn’t go as planned.
Early in the second quarter, the Aztecs botched a trick play that led to a loose football. An alert Mumford picked it up himself and threw it to teammate Keenan Brown for a nine-yard touchdown to open the scoring.
The play was perfectly legal because Mumford was behind the line of scrimmage when he threw it. That would be one of two TD receptions for Brown in the second quarter, and the Mavericks went on to win a thriller 28-21 in overtime.
