Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders has broken his silence over his decision to not declare for the 2024 NFL Draft.
In the early stages of the 2023 NCAA football season, Shedeur Sanders got off to a red-hot start that had him in the Heisman Trophy conversations. Not only that, but some analysts were projecting him to be a first-round pick in way-too-early 2024 NFL mock drafts.
Had Sanders declared for this year’s draft, he would have surely been among the first quarterbacks taken. However, Shedeur decided to return to Boulder for another year and continue working under his father, Buffs head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.
Speaking to reporters, Shedeur stated that he decided not to declare for the NFL Draft because his goal is to be the first quarterback taken in his class, via Grant Grubbs of On3.com:
“I’m trying to be the first quarterback off the board. That’s really what it is. I respect Caleb (Williams). I respect how he plays. He’s a great player. But, overall, there’s just different tiers of quarterbacks.
There’s guys that’s special, there’s guys that’s are good and guys that are OK, game managers. You’ve gotta understand what player you are and what category you fall in. I understood this year wasn’t my year. I didn’t have enough time at this level.”

Though Sanders is not entering the 2024 NFL Draft, this year’s class is absolutely loaded with promising QB prospects. The class is headlined by USC’s Caleb Williams and followed by LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.

Shedeur Sanders Should Be Even Better In 2024
Shedeur Sanders completed 69.3 percent of his pass attempt in 2023 for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns against only three interceptions to go along with four rushing scores. Those numbers are especially impressive when you consider that he took the most sacks in the country last season (45).
The Buffaloes offense was not the same when two-way star Travis Hunter was lost for three games with a lacerated liver. Hunter’s return changes everything for Colorado, not to mention that the o-line will enjoy plenty of new faces who arrived via the transfer portal.
So if all goes well for Shedeur Sanders, he just might fulfill his goal of becoming the first quarterback taken in the 2025 NFL Draft. The pieces are in place for him to be even better than the rising star we saw last year.
