The state of Colorado reportedly made a substantial amount during Deion Sanders’ first season as head coach of the CU Buffaloes.
Sanders, who took over the program last December following a remarkable stint at Jackson State, has been great for Boulder. The former star cornerback’s presence has made a difference on the field, with the Buffs winning three more games than they did last season, and it was also felt in state coffers.
According to Visit Boulder, Colorado experienced a significant cash boost from the six home games CU played in 2023 due to the sold-out crowds.
The Buffs raced out of the blocks as they got off to a 3-0 start that got them the rockstar treatment across the country. They only managed one win from the nine games to follow, yet the hype hardly waned.
All six of the team’s games at Folsom Field sold above the 50,183 capacity and, per the source noted above, the attendance was directly responsible for an estimated $113.2M in revenue.
The site used data, including “hotel occupancy, average daily hotel rate values, ticket sales, game attendance numbers and attendees’ cities of origin” to calculate how much the state made through CU games and determined that the “Prime Effect” is indeed real.

Meanwhile, the 4-8 Buffaloes are expected to do a lot better next season as Coach Prime has already gotten down to the business of mending his offensive line.
