The College Football Playoff unveiled its official postseason format which is set to be what obtains as of the 2024 season.
The CFP Board of Managers chose to implement a “5+7” model that will see the five highest-ranked conference champions get automatic bids while the other seven spots will be snatched up by the next highest-ranked teams, which will be decided by the selection committee.
“This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022,” Chair of the CFP Board of Managers Dr. Mark Keenum said in a statement. “I know this change will also be well received by student-athletes, coaches, and fans. We all will be pleased to see this new format come to life on the field this postseason.”
The reception to this has been mixed so far, with lots of fans seemingly confused.
“Right move to make the College Football Playoff the 5 + 7 model,” one wrote in response. “Best for everyone involved. You get deserved conference winners and the best non champs in the sport. CFP is in good hands now.”
