A college football insider has delivered an interesting take on the quarterback situation in Texas as he has suggested that Quinn Ewers should probably head to the NFL Draft because he will not be starting over Arch Manning in 2024.
Manning played behind Ewers and Maalik Murphy in his first season with the Longhorns and is expected to be the main backup next term as the latter is transferring out. However, Mac Engel is claiming that Ewers is unlikely to be the starter on the back of Texas’ Sugar Bowl loss to Washington this week.
“It’s hard to envision a scenario where Quinn Ewers is the starting quarterback at Texas in 2024. And he’s not a bad college quarterback,” he wrote in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
He added:
“Under most scenarios, Texas moving forward against that schedule with a Quinn Ewers as its starting quarterback would be fine. He played well enough for Texas to reach the playoffs, and nearly win the game.
“This is not most scenarios. Quarterback royalty is the current QB2, and Arch Manning will want to play.
“Quinn Ewers had a script. So does Arch Manning.
“Sarkisian will handle this re-write, and it’s hard to see a scenario where Manning is anything other than QB1.”
Of course, this is more opinion than anything else. And it’s mostly based on the notion that Manning wouldn’t want to play behind anyone for a second straight year while Ewers didn’t quite do enough against the Huskies.

It would be a huge surprise if Manning were to get the nod in 2024, especially considering that Ewers has opted to remain in college for another year despite having a guaranteed path to the pros.
