Hunter Mason, a student-athlete from Western Illinois University, died this week after a battle with brain cancer.
In April, Hunter was told he had a brain tumor.
“The loss of Hunter is tragic and heartbreaking,” said WIU Football Strength and Conditioning Coach, Jon Minnis. “For those who were fortunate enough to know Hunter, he was an incredible young man with an infectiously positive personality. We are extremely proud of Hunter and devastated by his passing.”
Mason, who had played for the Western Illinois football program since 2018, appeared in 29 games, making 15 starts over the course of his career.
On the official website of Western Illinois University, he attended Nevada High School in Nevada, Missouri, where he had a 4.0 GPA and was named to the All-Southwest Missouri team three times.
He was also a member of the National Honor Society (2015-18) and received all-conference and all-district accolades from 2015 to 2017. His career highs include 185 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
