New Mexico State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Wright has been suspended amid an investigation into some concerning social media activity.
Wright will miss NMSU’s rivalry game against New Mexico this weekend and will remain out while the program conducts a probe into some of his tweets, some dating as far back as 2011.
The coach is accused of making derogatory comments towards Africans, African-Americans Hispanics, women, and the LGBTQ+ community.
According to Las Cruces Sun News reporter Nick Coppola, over 150 posts were flagged as being either racist, sexist, or homophobic.
The posts, which are outlined fully on the Sun News website, range from 2011-2014, when Wright was still a wide receiver at Tarleton State. Some of them are detailed below, courtesy of the aforementioned publication.
“He posted about ‘Kony’ more than 60 times.
“Wright said that the African warlord “should be a college coach” because he “got thousands of black kids to do what he said” and referred to him as the “most influential person of the last 20 years.”
“Wright also said Kony was “knockin Africans down like bowling pins.”
“He made multiple derogatory posts about Hispanics and Latinos.
“Wright called a group of Mexican people a “Comanche town hall.”
“Wright referred to himself as the “Whitest Mexican” and later wrote that he was “oiled up and dark! lookin like a Mexican”
“He frequently used homophobic slurs.
“Wright used the word “gay” 73 times on social media in three years.
“Wright also commented on the body parts of transgender women.
He spoke down on women.
“Wright posted that women “who can’t make a sandwich” should get better at sex instead.
“Wright quipped that he would dress up as laundry for Halloween because “women love laundry” and proudly shared a post that described women’s sports as a “joke.”
“He did not shy away from common slurs for African-Americans.
“Wright reposted a post that referred to him as the taboo word and used it in a post of his own to announce a vacation to Jamaica.
“Wright also described a group of high school girls as “ghetto.”

New Mexico State Still Mulling Over Whether Tyler Wright Should Be Dismissed
The above is just a snippet from the social media activity currently under investigation, though Wright is understood to have removed a large number of them since his account came under scrutiny.
New Mexico State athletic director Mario Moccia initially told the outlet that he was not aware of any activity calling for action against Wright but thought the better of it after he was briefed on the matter, announcing the OC will “not be with the team” during the review.
Wright did not respond to Coppola’s request for comment, with head coach Tony Sanchez also declining to speak to the publication, deferring to the school.
Wright has shown a different and more mature side in recent years, shared posts in 2020 that starkly contrast to what’s shown above.
“Humans are humans regardless of skin color or background and deserve to be treated as such. We must do better, support each other’s goals and love one another,” he wrote in one post.
NMSU will continue its investigation next week, when it is expected to decide whether Wright will remain with the program.
