Tony Romo really believes in Zach Wilson.
The New York Jets have tried and failed multiple times ot find a franchise QB before with Mark Sanchez and Sam Darnold.
NFL on CBS analyst Tony Romo not only thinks they found one in Zach Wilson, but he also thinks he’ll be one of the best QB’s in the entire league.
“It’s rare for me to say someone has the ability to get in the stratosphere of a (Patrick) Mahomes, but I think this kid actually has that ability,” Romo said on a CBS Sports conference call Wednesday. “So when you have a quarterback like that, I think there’s no telling how good you can be. He can make up for a lot of weaknesses in a lot of areas for a football team.
“I think Zach Wilson is going to be in the discussion as one of the top three to five quarterbacks (in the NFL) very quickly. Within the next couple of years I think you’re going to see him rise. I think he’s unbelievable. His ceiling is so high.”
FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd said that Romo has “officially lost his mind” with those comments.
“I like Tony Romo. I defended him forever when he we was the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. I was always a huge Romo fan. He’s a terrific broadcaster… but he’s officially lost his mind,” Cowherd said on “The Herd” Thursday. “There is zero chance that Zach Wilson in the next ‘couple of years’ will be a top three quarterback.

“For [Wilson] to be a top three quarterback in the next few years, he would have to win… Folks, when you finish third or fourth in the division, you are not a top quarterback. The only reason we have Patrick Mahomes at No. 1, is because he wins,” Cowherd explained. “… This is nothing against Tony Romo, I like him. But, Zach Wilson has the worst coach in his division and the worst roster. The AFC East has never better coaches than I recall. So, love Tony Romo but that’s not gonna happen.
The BYU product shined this preseason as he completed 15 of 20 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns in his two appearances against the Giants and Packers.
Wilson will get his first taste of NFL regular season action when the Jets face the Panthers on Week 1.
