Rice has one of the more intriguing QB-WR combos in college football and one of them has a very famous last name.
Rice Owls wide receiver Luke McCaffrey is making a name for himself. Yes, he is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.
The fifth-year junior and former three/four-star quarterback prospect in the recruiting Class of 2019 made the switch to wide receiver in 2022 after playing quarterback throughout high school and his first several seasons of college football, two of which were at Nebraska.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound player played in four games as a freshman so he maintained his redshirt for the year. His second year saw him play in seven games with two starts as he completed 48 of 76 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown with six interceptions, and rushed for 364 yards and three touchdowns on 65 carries.
After his second year, he would hit the transfer portal and land with the Louisville Cardinals but he would leave them after a few months and land at Rice. The starting quarterback job was not in his future and he decided to make the move to WR during spring practices in 2022.
It paid off in a huge way as McCaffrey finished as Rice’s leading pass-catcher during his first season as a receiver with 58 catches for 723 yards and six touchdowns. He found his true calling.
