Last season’s Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has had some explaining to do this year as more people are beginning to notice him.
The USC quarterback, projected to be the first overall pick of next year’s draft, is considered to be the best QB in the NCAA. He’s also becoming popular for his painted nails, which he’s had to explain at least twice over the last two months.
First off, Williams does not care what you think about his painted nails, which he reckons is a form of expression. He’s recently revealed that he’s been painting them for around three years and the practice was inspired by his mother, who has been painting nails for as long as he can remember.
Check his explanation out in the video below:
The Trojans star also spoke to PEOPLE about his fashion choice back in August.
“I think the nails thing kind of took everybody by surprise,” he noted. “I’ve been doing it before college, but it took everybody by surprise, just because you don’t always see male athletes who play football paint their nails. But I think it’s just another way of expression.”

He also revealed having agreed to tone it down after talks with his coaches as his markings have expressed some profanity.
“This year, I’m gonna tone it down,” Williams added. “I’ve had a few talks with my coaches. But I’m gonna keep doing it and express myself.”
Williams is favored to win the Heisman again this season, having led USC to a 6-0 start to the season. They’re looking to go 7-0 when they play Notre Dame this weekend.
