USC quarterback Caleb Williams has fired back at the criticism he’s received over going into the stands to cry in his mother’s arms after the Trojans lost 52-42 to the Washington Huskies last weekend.
This was certainly a new look as far as football is concerned, with jubilation or frustration the emotions typically associated with the game.
Williams’ moment with his mom went viral after the loss and the reactions were all over the place. Some said it showed weakness while others loved to see how much he cared about winning. Another section was of the view that it was an attention grab.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner has since spoken about the viral moment and said he was just showing who he really is.
“I’ve been an advocate for mental health, trying to show your emotions and express yourself, things like that,” he told the Orange County Register’s Luca Evans. “It’s something I’ve been doing since I was young and now, being on the national level, being able to try and share that awareness with the public.”
“Me doing just what I did on Saturday, even though it was far from what I was trying to do, it showed and spread that kind of awareness. It just shows truth in what I speak. Being able to share that, being authentic is important.”

Williams has been under a microscope all season. Such scrutiny comes with being a projected No. 1 overall pick while playing for a team expected to challenge for a national championship. It’s also given Williams a stage to portray the image he wants to the media and fans.
