Last season’s Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has been the top 2024 NFL Draft prospect for a while now.
The USC quarterback is generally predicted to go No. 1 overall should he declare next year, but it appears folks are no longer unanimous on that front as there has been speculation of him slipping.
Dane Brugler, a draft analyst for The Athletic, has already knocked him down to third and could be the first major evaluator to take him off the top spot.
Brugler has UNC QB Drake Maye at No. 1 on his draft board, with Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. in second place. While this doesn’t actually mean Caleb won’t go first overall, Brugler is a respected analyst and has his ear to the ground, so he might have heard something from NFL scouts.
The above isn’t to say that Williams isn’t having a good season for the Trojans either, yet he isn’t playing at Heisman level at the moment.
The QB has thrown for 2,646 yards, 25 touchdowns, and four interceptions while scrambling for nine scores himself. Still, he has attracted criticism over his attitude and body language while he’s also been accused of trying to do too much by passing up open receivers to attempt bigger plays.

Maye has been phenomenal this season; no doubt. But it’s still hard to imagine a QB-needy NFL team having the No. 1 pick and passing on Williams.
