Reports of Bronny James entering the transfer portal in a bid to leave USC and play elsewhere next season have spread like wildfire amid the ongoing NCAA Tournament.
James, who spent his freshman season with the Trojans, is believed to be headed to another program given that longtime college basketball reporter Dick Weiss tweeted as much this week.
“USC freshman guard Bronny James is entering the transfer portal. good for him. needs to get away from the Hollywood hype. best of luck to LeBron’s kid,” Weiss shared on X.
Everyone else ran with the report, though there’s talk of Weiss being duped by an April Fools joke claiming the point guard was set to leave USC. The Hall of Fame writer has since deleted his original tweet and recently admitted that he can’t confirm his initial report.
“can’t confirm Bronny James story guys. still think its an idea whose time has come. make sense if it happens. I love the kid, think he could be a star elsewhere,” he tweeted on Tuesday night.

Fans fired criticism at Weiss following his admission.
“Can’t confirm your own story? Might wanna get some rest, grandpa,” one wrote.
“So don’t say it’s happening that’s journalism 101,’ another suggested.
Bronny James Has Not Confirmed This Either
Bronny James hasn’t confirmed or denied on the back of said report doing the rounds online. His father, LeBron James, spoke to reporters after helping the Lakers beat the Raptors on Tuesday night and admitted he had no idea where the news came from, adding he would not get involved in the decision-making process if there is one to be made.
“I don’t know where it came from, but at the end of the day Bronny’s his own man and he has some tough decisions to make,” he said, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “And when he’s ready to make those decisions he’ll let us all know. But as his family, we’re going to support whatever he does.”
It would be nice to hear what Bronny has to say about all of this.
