The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to be without one of their star players for the next several weeks.
All-American tight end Brock Bowers is set for surgery following a high ankle sprain suffered during the first half of Georgia’s 37-20 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. And, while the university anticipates a full recovery, they were unable to reveal a specific timeline for a return.
According to ESPN sources, Bowers will undergo a TightRope operation in which surgical thread will be used instead of metal screws to expedite recovery. The normal recovery time for such a procedure is four to six weeks, so it remains to be seen just how long the 20-year-old will be out.
Bowers will be the third Georgia player to undergo such an operation this season. Amarius Mims, a starting right tackle for the program, had one after sustaining a high ankle sprain in September and has not returned. Tight end Lawson Luckie is back after having a similar surgery in August.
The star TE has been the focus of the Bulldogs’ offense this season and leads the team in receptions, with 41, having also recorded 567 yards and four touchdowns. He’s amassed over 100 yards in each of the previous three games.
Now that he’s out, the reigning national champions will look to Luckie, as well as another freshman in Pearce Spurlin III, and sophomore Oscar Delp.
