Fans ripped Louisiana State University head coach Brian Kelly following an interview in which he seemed to blame his players for losing to Florida State.
The Seminoles handed the Tigers a 45-24 defeat on Sunday after a second-half collapse Kelly described as “a total failure.”
LSU held a 17-14 lead at halftime, however, the Seminoles would go on to score 31 unanswered points in the second half as the Tigers simply had no answer for quarterback Jordan Travis, who passed for 342 yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Keon Coleman was also a thorn in Kelly’s side, having registered 122 receiving yards and three TDs.
The result marked the No. 5 Tigers’ worst loss as a ranked team in a season opener since the AP poll era began in 1936.
“This is a total failure from a coaching standpoint and a player standpoint that we have to obviously address and we have to own,” Kelly told reporters after the game. “I know adversity is always going to strike at some time in this game, and this is our first real piece of adversity that we have to address. I’m confident our guys and our coaches will rally in the manner that they need to.”
He also accused his team of thinking they were the two-time champion Georgia Bulldogs.
