Brent Musburger has ended a decade-long rumor regarding Eminem during the legendary rapper’s appearance on ESPN a decade ago.
Back in the 2013 season, ESPN brought on Eminem for an interview in the broadcast booth during a Michigan Wolverines-Notre Dame Fighting Irish contest. Musburger and analyst Kirk Herbstreit spoke with the award-winning rapper during the contest, but the interview immediately got off to an awkward start.
At the very beginning of the interview, Eminem appeared dazed and confused. This led to speculation from fans that Eminem was high during the interview, even though he’s been clean since 2008:
During an interview on “The Dan Patrick Show” (h/t Sean Keeley of Awful Announcing), Musburger poured cold water over the rumor that Eminem was high during his appearance with the Worldwide Leader In Sports.
Musburger instead cited Eminem’s lack of familiarity with ESPN’s monitors as a reason for the awkward pause from the latter at the beginning of the interview:
“He wasn’t high. Everyone thinks he was. He came in, he’s standing between Herbstreit and me and he was not familiar with the monitors, so he was looking at himself, and he kinda froze on the camera.”

So there you have it. Let the decade-long speculation end once and for all.
Musburger left ESPN in 2017 and took the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders’ radio play-by-play commentary job in 2018. Musburger announced in the 2022 offseason that he was stepping down and appears to be retired for good.
