Literally, nobody saw this news coming.
According to Jim McBride, the Patriots are releasing QB Cam Newton, clearing the way for first-round QB Mac Jones to start.
Less than 24 hours ago, Newton had seemingly declared himself the No. 1 QB. Well, that was false.
Newton did not have the best season in 2020, but the team elected to bring him back on a 1-year deal.
Last season, the 32-year-old appeared in 14 games for the Patriots and completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 2,415 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has also rushed for 513 yards and 12 touchdowns.
