A starting quarterback playing for a Big Ten supremo has decided to enter the transfer portal following a disappointing end to his season.
With the Ohio State Buckeyes falling to the Michigan Wolverines in late November and watching them win the conference title on Saturday, it appears huge changes are afoot. For one, the program will be heading into the 2024 season with a new starter at QB as Kyle McCord is looking to take his talents elsewhere.
McCord won the starting job early in the season, ousting Devin Brown following a two-year wait behind CJ Stroud. He is now set to leave Ohio State after three years, having come short of a spot in the College Football Playoff.
“As time went on, Kyle got better as the season went on,” Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day said on Sunday, per ESPN. “Had a little bit of those ankle injuries that he worked through; he showed toughness there. Certainly the Notre Dame game, he played really well down the stretch.
“So I think there was growth there, for sure, and I think he’s a good quarterback, I do. After every year, you evaluate everything, and try to figure out what to do next. But I think there was a lot of progress made this year.”
Ohio State will be playing Missouri in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl at the end of December. Day was not able to commit to the QB as his starter for the game.
“When you come up short, the bottom line is you got to look at everything because you didn’t get it done, and that’s the thing that is just sobering here,” he noted.
