It’s official.
The Big Ten will not start its 2020 season on time.
The Big Ten presidents voted today not to play in the fall but to try to play in the spring, according to multiple reports.
The Big Ten is the first Power 5 conference to pull the plug altogether. There have been rumblings that the Pac-12 could also decide to take a similar measure. The Big 12 is also said to be holding meetings to weigh the question of how to play and deal with health and safety concerns caused by COVID-19.
The biggest concern for all conferences was the potential long-term health issues that could arise among student-athletes who may otherwise dodge the primary symptoms of the coronavirus — including myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle that can impact the heart’s ability to pump blood normally.
