ESPN analyst Booger McFarland did not agree with the College Football Playoff leaving out Florida State football in favor of Alabama on Sunday.
He has been raging about it ever since and it continued this week.
He didn’t mince his words on the matter Sunday and he did not mince anymore when he went on to defend FSU again on the “Dan Patrick Show” on Tuesday and it led to a debate between him and Patrick.
“Football is a sport, man. We watch football because we never fully know. Any given Sunday. That’s the old cliche and when you start talking about the draw and the matchup and what’s sexy, who cares what’s sexy,” McFarland said. “This is not a sport like figure skating. This is not that. It’s never been that. Even though we want to make it out to be a beauty pageant, the nature of football takes you away from being that.”
“I hear you you and everyone that’s saying it’s about the money, matchups, and all these different things. Yeah, to a certain extent. You can schedule those matchups in the non-conference. But, when you start putting together a playoff that is earned. That is earned. I will go to my grave saying that Florida State, based on what we do, and to your point, here’s what I’ll say to you. 10 of the 13 members on the committee were the same last year. There are three that are different.”
“Last year, I think you and I can both agree that Alabama, who lost to Tennessee and who lost to LSU, was a better team than TCU. TCU lost the conference championship to Kansas State, they put TCU in the playoff. So, why last year did we not go and get the best team? What’s the difference? To me, there is none.”
Patrick stated that the College Football Playoff is a “TV show” and agreed with the four teams that got selected as McFarland disagreed and wondered why they even play the games.

The No. 5 Seminoles are the first team in the history of the CFP to go undefeated with a Power Five conference championship and not make the final top-four ranking. On Saturday, Florida State defeated Louisville 16-6 in the ACC Championship with third-string quarterback Brock Glenn.
They are basically being punished for losing starting quarterback Jordan Travis, who suffered a season-ending injury against North Alabama last month.
McFarland joined ESPN in 2014 after a nine-year NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. He was drafted 15th overall in the 1999 NFL Draft after starring at LSU.
