University of South Florida men’s basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim has sadly passed away at the age of 43.
According to the school, Abdur-Rahim died following complications from a medical procedure at a Tampa hospital.
“We are heartbroken over the passing of Coach Abdur-Rahim,” they shared via X on Thursday evening.
“A tremendous man & leader with an infectious personality that was a shining light to all he encountered. Our thoughts & prayers are with his family, friends and everyone that he left a lasting impact on.”

Abdur-Rahim had previously coached at Kennesaw State, leading the Owls to 2023 conference regular season titles and their first-ever NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament appearance.

He was with the program from 2019-2023.
The coach began his career as a graduate assistant under Billy Kennedy at Murray State. He later became a full-time assistant coach before moving on to Georgia Tech, where he served as the director of player development.
He then took up an assistant job at the College of Charleston.
Abdur-Rahim worked with Kennedy again at Texas A&M, helping the program to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances.
He is the brother of former NBA player Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who is now the president of the G League.
Amir Abdur-Rahim Was An Instant Hit At USF
Amir Abdur-Rahim was heading into his second year with USF after coaching the team to the AAC regular-season championship last season. This marked the first time the school won the conference and the first time it was ranked in the AP top 25.
“All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim,” vice president for athletics Michael Kelly said.
“He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss.”
