A game-worn jersey belonging to Michael Jordan from his 1982-83 championship season at the University of North Carolina just sold for an insane price.
The North Carolina jersey sold for $1.38 million on Saturday with Heritage Auctions. It was worn during the season that Jordan was named the NCAA player of the year by The Sporting News and is the only known only known jersey photo-matched the cover photo from the issue.
This same jersey was also up for auction back in 1999 and then sold for $63,500. The investment clearly paid off. The previous record for a Jordan jersey sale had been set in October when a No. 23 Chicago Bulls jersey from 1986-87 went for $480,000 through Heritage Auctions.
“As the final price tag proves,” Heritage director of sport auctions Chris Ivy said, “this jersey has everything any serious collector could possibly want.
“It’s got scarcity, it’s one of a kind, it’s photo-matched,” Ivy later told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s a great investment. That’s another angle. … It’s something that you’re investing in. I think this is as solid as it gets.”
As his college career, Michael Jordan went on to win five NBA titles with the Bulls, while also collecting just as many MVP awards throughout his 15-year career.
