You really hate to see things like this.
On Saturday night, Mesa Skyline pulled off an upset when they defeated No. 1-ranked Laveen Cesar Chavez 63-56 for the Phoenix Union High School District Coyote Classic boys basketball championship.
That would become the back story to what happened after the game.
During the handshake line, a quick argument turned into a fist being thrown which turned into a chaotic scene as all players, parents, and whomever else came down to brawl.
Police were called to the scene, but no arrests were made, according to AZCentral.
“Officers arrived and the crowd was asked to leave,” said Mercedes Fortune, Phoenix police public information officer. “There were no reports of injuries and I was not advised of any arrests.”
Skyline coach James Capriotti said the atmosphere was “very volatile” during the game, the last of a 24-team tournament to open the high school season in Arizona.
“It was a terrible scene,” Capriotti said. “It was a really bad look after a really good game.”
Capriotti said he has it on film that the the first punch was thrown by a Cesar Chavez player.
“Punches were thrown,” he said. “The first punch was thrown by them.”
