College football is set to undergo massive rule changes, with the NCAA approving some significant alterations ahead of the 2024 season.
The NCAA Football Rules Committee proposed various recommendations back in March, and according to a statement from college football’s governing body, several of them have been accepted by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday.
Games between two FBS programs will allow teams to use helmet communication between someone on the sideline and one player on the field at a time. Communication will be shut off when 15 seconds are left on the play clock or when the ball gets snapped, whichever comes first.
The West Virginia Mountaineers tested the technology during their win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in December.
“I like it,” head coach Neal Brown said after the game. “I think it’s a positive step for college football.”

While this should promote the elimination of sign stealing, teams will still be permited to use signals if they want to.
College Football Is Set For Additional Rule Changes
College football is set for another major rule change, with the two-minute warning also coming to the NCAA. An automatic timeout will be called when two minutes are left in the second and fourth quarters of every game; it will synchronize timing rules such as stopping the clock after a first down occurs in bounds and other end-of-half stipulations.
The use of digital tablets on the sideline has been approved too.
“Teams can have up to 18 active tablets for use in the coaching booth, sideline, and locker room,” the NCAA notes.
“Tablets cannot be connected to other devices to project larger additional images and cannot include analytics, data, or data access capability, or other communication access. All team personnel will be allowed to view the tablets during the game.“
Horse-collar tackles taking place within the tackle box will also be penalized moving forward.
