A college baseball player from Pennsylvania is dead at the age of 19 after a freak accident involving a falling dugout.
ABC 27 News has reported that Angel Mercado-Ocasio suffered a serious injury when a makeshift dugout collapsed on him while he was helping take it down after the city ordered it removed from Harrisburg Park. The incident took place during a youth baseball game on Monday; Angel reportedly succumbed to his injury this Thursday.
The 19-year-old was a student at Central Penn State College, which has since released a statement.
“Our Central Penn College family is devastated by the loss of Angel,” the institution’s president Linda Fedrizzi-Williams wrote, per TMZ. “As friends who have become family, we are mourning the heart-wrenching loss of one of our own, a promising young athlete who senselessly lost his life while helping others enjoy the sport he loved so much.”
Matt Maisel, a spokesperson for the city of Harrisburg, said Angel was removing the makeshift dugout that had been put up illegally when it fell on him. He was rushed to the hospital and the situation was thought to be bleak earlier in the week.
The youngster had played in 17 games for said college this season, registering two hits.
