Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe has taken a savage shot at former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien ahead of the program’s college playoff semi vs. Michigan.
The QB was speaking to reporters on Thursday when he revealed O’Brien told him he shouldn’t play at the QB position.
O’Brien, who is now the OC for the stagnant New England Patriots, was with Alabama for Milroe’s first two seasons and apparently didn’t believe the youngster was good enough to throw the football, advising him to play elsewhere. It appears he used that criticism as motivation.
“Growing up when I went to camp, they labeled me as a receiver or they saw me as not playing the quarterback position,” he told reporters.” With that, I beat all odds by playing quarterback, and that is something I try to do as much as possible, be an efficient quarterback, be the best version of myself playing the position, because at the end of the day, I want to be the best that I’m doing right now.”
“My own offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien told me I shouldn’t play quarterback,” he added. “So there’s a lot of things I could have motivation on, and that’s motivation.”
The QB had his struggles early in the season but turned out to be one of the best players in his position as he helped the Tide qualify for the CFP.
Milroe played two games while Bryce Young was injured last season, with O’Brien the OC then. Both of them were victories.

Playing under new OC Tommy Rees this season, the 21-year-old has thrown for 2,718 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions while completing 65.5 percent of his attempts. He finished sixth in the Heisman voting this year.
“The biggest thing was to stay true to myself,” he noted. “I had a bigger purpose than anyone’s opinion. (O’Brien) told me a bunch of positions I could’ve switched to, but look where I’m at, so who has the last laugh?”
