Somehow, Pete Carroll’s departure from the Seattle Seahawks wasn’t even the biggest American football-related coaching news today.
In a stunner for the ages, ESPN’s Chris Low reports that legendary Alabama Crimson Tide football head coach Nick Saban is retiring. The 72-year-old served as Alabama’s head coach since 2007, leading the program to six national championships.
Saban retires with 292 career coaching wins, including a jaw-dropping 206-29-0 record over his 17 years with the Crimson Tide. Saban also led the LSU Tigers to a national championship in the 2003 season.
Before his tenure with LSU, Saban was the head coach at Toledo for one year (1990) and at Michigan State (1995 to 1999). He was also head coach of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins from 2005 to ’06.
