Several big-name schools have been named as potential landing spots for Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy.
Murphy announced his decision to enter the transfer portal this Wednesday and there was always a sense that he was going to have multiple suitors once he opted for a move.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, there are at least seven schools interested in having the QB join their program, namely Southern California and South Carolina, as well as Baylor, Georgia, Oregon State, Syracuse, and Duke.
“Preliminary list, it’s very early still, a couple of schools that have indicated interest are both USCs — Southern California and South Carolina — Baylor, Georgia, Oregon State, Syracuse and Duke,” Thamel said on ‘College Football Live’ (H/T On3). “Those are basically what doubles as a list of quarterback-needy schools, and there’s going to be plenty of interest for Maalik Murphy.”
The Trojans will be in the market for a new quarterback as Caleb Williams is on his way to the NFL while the Blue Devils are also on the hunt for a replacement for Riley Leonard. Georgia and South Carolina would be interesting destinations too.
Murphy didn’t seem particularly pleased to have to enter the portal ahead of the College Football Playoff, especially after helping the Longhorns get in there starting in place of Quinn Ewers while the latter was out with an injury.

Murphy finished the 2023 season with 477 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He recently expressed frustration about having to leave Texas before the College Football Playoff.
“I hate it, I hate it,” he told ESPN. “I’m super invested in this team. Everything that we’ve done along the way and all the work we’ve put in together, it’s hard to walk away, especially at this point during the season.”
The quarterback ended the 2023 season with 477 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and three interceptions playing as Ewers’ backup. He’s now after a permanent starting job elsewhere.
