The 5-7 format for the expanded College Football Playoff was approved on Tuesday and will begin for the 2024 season. The field for the 12-team College Football Playoff beginning next season will comprise five conference champions and seven at-large selections.
Under the new format, the playoff will grant first-round byes to the four highest-ranked conference championships while teams ranked No. 5 through No. 12 will meet at the home venue of the higher-ranked team.
Per On3.com’s Pete Nakos, here is where the slate of playoff games will be played.
- First round: Dec. 20 and Dec. 21
- Quarterfinals: Dec. 31 and Jan. 1
- Semifinals: Jan. 9 and Jan. 10
- CFP National Championship: Jan. 20

The national championship game will be on January 20th in Atlanta.
The selection committee’s rankings also will determine the seven at-large bids. There will be no limit to how many teams can come from the same league.
The coming season will be the first with a 12-team playoff after 10 years of it being a four-team event.
During the decade of four-team playoffs, the only team from outside a power conference to make the final four was Cincinnati as they had a 13-0 record following the American championship game in 2021.
It’s a new day and age in college football that is sure to bring tons of more excitement.
