The New Orleans Pelicans have been very patient with Zion Williamson to this point. But they have been advised to “pull the plug” on the former Blue Devils star ahead of the 2023/24 NBA season.
Williamson came into the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2019 and has hardly been available given the slate of injuries that have had him sit out. As if that wasn’t bad enough, his personal life could seriously impact the team if things are allowed to spiral out of control.
According to The Athletic’s William Guillory, someone associated with an NBA team has declared that the Pels should get rid of Zion while they have the chance this offseason, though another expects him to have an MVP-type campaign.
“During my time in Vegas, I heard opinions from a few folks who were all over the place when it comes to Williamson and his current value. I had one person associated with a team tell me New Orleans should pull the plug on his era while they have the chance this offseason,” Guillory writes.
“I had another person tell me he believes Williamson is going to be fueled by all the controversy this summer and become an MVP candidate in 2023-24.”
It might not make sense for New Orleans to give up that quickly, though. Zion still has five years left on his deal with the team and there’s always the chance of him putting his fitness woes behind him.
The Pelicans with a healthy Zion have been formidable and it would be interesting to see him and Brandon Ingram play together consistently, having done so in just 12 games over the past two seasons.
