The New Orleans Pelicans are about to undergo significant changes this season. So, Brandon Ingram could be the first to go. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon and Bobby Marks, ahead of the February deadline, the Pelicans have made finding a new team for Ingram a major priority.
“Right now, the 5-28 Pelicans, whose playoff hopes have been destroyed by a series of injuries to the rotation, are focused on moving one of Williamson’s teammates ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline. Finding a trade for injured forward Brandon Ingram, a one-time All-Star in a contract year whose extension talks have repeatedly fizzled, is the priority for the Pelicans’ front office, sources told ESPN.”
After three seasons with the Lakers, the seasoned forward returned in 2019. Ingram has given Pelicans supporters optimism for a more competitive future in the Western Conference, joining Zion Williamson and seasoned players like CJ McCollum. Before injuries ended their season, they even had a run as the first seed in the Western Conference in the 2022–2023 season.
What Does Brandon Ingram Offer For Other NBA Franchises?
Brandon Ingram has been a dependable player for the Pels. But they have not seen the results they had hoped for from his pairing with Zion. The squad has failed to overcome obstacles like injuries and strong superteams. There is already a growing belief that their chance to contend for a championship has already been lost.
The Kings obviously need some reinforcements after firing their head coach. Moreover, attempting to bench their newest player, DeMar DeRozan, midway through the season. Ingram might be the boost they need. Ingram may return to Los Angeles with the Purple and Gold if not to Sacramento. As a former player, Ingram has previously seen what it’s like to play for the storied Laker team.
It’s hard to say where Ingram and the Pelicans will wind up since the future is unknown. But it won’t be long until he completely controls his destiny. He will be eligible for free agency in the summer of 2025, with only one year and $36 million remaining on his contract. So, the Pelicans are keen to get him while they can.
